Queensland storms can be ferocious, with howling winds, driving rain and gigantic hail stones – all of which can cause significant damage to your home and its roof.
As roof restoration professionals we’ve seen the destruction first-hand, and we believe it is important to be as prepared as possible for the unpredictable storm season.
Read on as we share three tasks to complete before the storms hit to help protect your property.
Our roofs and gutters are highly susceptible to damage caused by the sunshine state’s wild weather.
But these three simple tasks may offer some protection.
1. Have your roof inspected
We believe the first step is to have your roof and gutters inspected to check on their condition and determine if anything needs repairing before the worst of the weather arrives.
You may be able to carry out a quick assessment safely from the ground, but you may need a professional to assess any harder-to-reach spots.
Either way, things to take note of on a metal roof would include:
Any rust
Indications you may have a roof leak
Unsecured metal sheets
Any obvious holes or loose, missing or rusty screws
For tiled roofs, keep an eye out for:
Any cracked or chipped tiles
Signs of water leaks
Damaged ridge capping
Damaged or cracked roof pointing
Also, you should be able to see from the ground if your gutters and downpipes are secured properly. If they’re not they won’t be performing as they should.
2. Trim back tree branches and shrubs
Falling trees and branches can cause extensive and costly damage to your roof, so it’s a good idea to cut back any overhanging branches that might be at risk of falling.
Also, if you’ve got shrubs or leafy plants which are close to your roof line you will want to trim those back as well. This will help to reduce the amount of leaf litter that builds up in your gutters and downpipes.
3. Clean your gutters
Following on from the above point, if your gutters and drains are chock-full of debris, they won’t work properly and the water may struggle to drain away properly.
As a consequence, this will increase the risk of water leaking into internal structures and damaging other parts of your home.
Expert Tip: We recommend checking with your insurance company as to what they cover in relation to roof damage from a storm or weather event. Insurance companies may not cover you if your roof has not been properly maintained.
